When the Elevator Dropped!

January 3, 2024

Today’s experience: Leaving the hospital lab, I stepped into the elevator and pushed the purple button for the ground floor. Another woman stepped in and pushed the tan button for the lower level as we stood quietly, waiting for the doors to close. She faced the window, looking out onto the Parkway, and I stood sideways to see the street and the elevator doors as they closed. Once the doors closed, there was an unfamiliar jerk and a quick, unexpected drop from the fifth floor to somewhere between the second and third floors.

I suddenly recalled a YouTube video I saw just a day ago. The video was titled “10 Facts You Should Know.” As the memory of the video played in my head, I braced myself against the elevator into a squat. Fumbling with my right hand, I attempted to open the elevator door by pushing the buttons.

Unnerved, I could see we were between floors through the glass window facing the street. Suddenly, the elevator self-corrected, and we were even with the third floor, but the doors would not open.

Again, a jerk and a drop. This time, we were between the ground floor and the lower level. The elevator self-corrected again, placing us at the ground floor, the purple level, and this time the door opened.

The lady followed me from the elevator and said, “I’m walking to the lower level.” I responded, That’s the best thing to do.”

Who knew I would find myself in such a situation? At the same time, Who knew a YouTube video on squatting as an elevator falls would be the first thought to come to mind?
